How we handle personal data. The heart of it: your work stays on your own computer.
Last updated: 26 July 2026
This policy explains how Treacle Trading Ltd (company number 17362507), registered in England and Wales, trading as JVal ("we", "us", "our"), handles personal data. We are the data controller for the account and billing data described below. Contact: info@jval.info.
JVal is built to keep your work private. Your valuations and your clients' details stay on your own computer — we don't receive them or store them on our servers. The only personal data we hold is what we need to run your account and subscription, plus, if you choose to use the AI features, the specific item information you send to generate a draft. We never sell your data.
1. Account data — your name, email address, a securely hashed password (never the plaintext), and your subscription tier and status. Why: to create and run your account and licence. Lawful basis: performance of our contract with you.
2. Billing data — your plan, payment status and invoices. Card details are handled directly by our payment provider (Stripe); we do not see or store your full card number. Why: to take payment and meet our tax and accounting duties. Lawful basis: contract, and legal obligation.
3. Usage data — a monthly count of how many AI descriptions you've used (to apply your plan's allowance), and basic technical logs needed to keep the service secure and working. Why: to operate the service and enforce fair use. Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in running a reliable, secure service.
4. AI-feature data (only if you use those features) — when you choose to generate an AI description or read a research screenshot, the item photo and the assembled item text, or the research screenshot, are sent to our processing service to produce the draft. We ask that you do not include your clients' personal details in these; the item description contains no client identifying information. This data is used only to generate your draft, is not used to train any AI model, and is not stored by us afterwards. Lawful basis: your consent and performance of our contract (you choose whether to use these features).
What we do NOT collect: your valuation records, client names and contacts, schedules, photograph libraries and calculations — these are stored on your device, not sent to us. You remain the data controller for your own clients' information, and are responsible for your own compliance in respect of them; where the AI features process an item image on your instruction, we act as your processor for that limited purpose.
Our website jval.info does not use advertising or analytics cookies. Our hosting provider may set strictly necessary cookies for security. If you contact us, we use your details only to reply and keep a record of the correspondence.
We use a small number of trusted providers ("processors") who act only on our instructions: Cloudflare (hosting and the secure services behind the app), Stripe (payment processing) and Anthropic (the AI provider that generates descriptions from the item information you submit, via our own secure relay). We may also disclose data where required by law. We do not sell your personal data or share it for others' marketing.
Some providers (for example Stripe and Anthropic) may process data outside the UK. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards recognised under UK law, such as UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement / Standard Contractual Clauses.
We keep account and billing data for as long as you have an account and for a period afterwards to meet legal, tax and accounting requirements (typically up to six years for financial records). Usage counts are kept per month. AI-feature submissions are transient and not retained by us after your draft is returned. You can close your account at any time.
Passwords are stored only as a salted hash, never in plaintext. Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS). Access to account systems is restricted. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data.
Under UK data-protection law you have the right to: access a copy of your data; have inaccurate data corrected; have your data erased; restrict or object to processing; data portability; and to withdraw consent to optional processing at any time. To exercise any of these, email info@jval.info. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) — ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113 — though we'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.
JVal is a professional tool intended for users aged 18 and over; it is not directed at children.
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll post the new version here and, for material changes, let you know. The "last updated" date shows the current version.
